Training and Equipment

 

All members of the Brackley Community First Responder team undergo intensive training and assessment with Training Officers from East Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust, to enable them to deliver the following level of skills and care using the equipment below:

 

Volunteers attend a four-day course, taught by Ambulance Service Trainers, which covers all aspects of emergency first aid, including:

First Responders are trained in the following skills:-
Basic Life Support (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation)
Use of a Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
Oxygen Therapy – Resuscitation and Therapeutic
Drug Administration. Salbutamol, Glucagon, GTN, Glucogel, Epi-Pen
Management of Breathing Problems; Cardiac Arrests; Choking; Chest Pains; Control of Bleeding; Diabetic Emergencies; Seizures; Allergic Reactions; Strokes; Unconscious Patients
Patient Assessment – Primary and Secondary
Patient History

Each new responder must complete a formal assessment at the end of their training and regular ongoing training and refresher sessions are undertaken by the volunteers.

Community First Responders carry a response bag with essential first aid equipment along with oxygen and an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

Drugs – Oxygen, Salbutamol
Various Oxygen Mask – 28%, 100% and Nasal Cannulas
Bag-Valve-Mask Resuscitator
Airway Suction Unit
Airway Management – Oropharyngeal Airways
Pulse Oximeter
Patient Report Form

Community First Responders also undergo continued re-training and are re-certified every twelve months with East Midlands Ambulance Service to ensure that all team members can give the best possible care to our community. Regular team meetings and training exercises also take place.

Each Responder kit costs over £2,000. With an annual maintenance of around £350 per year.
